Frequently asked questions
A quick take on security, installation, encryption and what Karas can do.
Is Karas free?
Yes. You can use the messenger for free on any device.
Do I need a phone number to sign up?
No. An account is created without a phone number — just open it and register.
Who can read my messages?
Private chats are protected by end-to-end encryption — only you and your contact can see them. Neither the service, the provider, nor outsiders hold the key to decrypt them.
Are groups and channels encrypted?
End-to-end encryption currently works for private (one-on-one) chats. It does not yet apply to group chats and channels.
What happens if I sign in on a new device?
To open encrypted chats on a new device, a key backup is used. It is activated when you set a password in settings, and is stored on the server in encrypted form only.
What if I forget the key password?
Without the correct password the key cannot be recovered — that is a feature of real end-to-end encryption. In return, no one but you can ever access your chats.
Does Karas work without a VPN?
Yes. Messages, files and media are delivered without a VPN.
Which devices does Karas run on?
Windows, Android, iPhone/iPad and any modern browser. One account syncs across all of them.
Can I make calls and share my screen?
Yes. Personal and group audio and video calls are available, plus screen sharing — straight from chat.
Are there stickers?
Yes, there is a sticker catalog. You can create your own and import packs from Telegram.
What languages is Karas available in?
Russian and English. The language switches in settings.
